Time to get our wardrobes ready for sunny summer days!
On the runways late last fall we saw the best designers reveal the fashion trends for the upcoming 2023 Summer season. I know not all the trends will receive as big a receptions as others but for fun I thought I’d list some of the key trends and focus on my top five favorite trends that I believe are more approachable and possibly something I would add to my closet.
The top trends are plaid, military, fit and flare, disco and shimmer, oversized, denim, sleek maxi dresses, sheer, cut outs, black, textures, fringes, sequins and great patterns, especially floral, even 3D floral designs. I’m going to focus on five of the best summer 2023 fashion trends, oversized, denim, ballerina, sheer and military fashion trends.
Summer 2023 Fashion Trend 1: Oversized or Maximalism
The oversized look crossed through several of the looks on the runway, from jackets to coats, pants and more.
A lot of these looks either seems to have clean basic lines or the complete opposite with texture, fringes and feathers. My favorite designers in of these looks was Stella Mcartney and Saint Laurent. It seems everything old is new again but with a bit more flare and even more exaggeration. The big shouldered suit jackets I used to wear to the office years ago are back and bigger, and I mean bigger than ever. The length of the jacket is much lower and absolutely no tailoring around the waist area and the shoulders are higher than any I wore back in the day. The oversized suit jacket is likely the most approachable look that will be adapted to the mass market.
Summer 2023 Fashion Trend 2: Denim, Denim, Denim
Denim for any type of clothing style continues into the Summer season. Mixing denim colors and lightweight and heavyweight denim fabrics is on trend. Designers Chloé and KhaiteIf presented the strongest looks in denim. If you can sew and have access to some old denim you could be right in style with patchwork denim shorts or a skirt. Patchwork is hot and so are unfinished hems. A favorite look is the bootcut flare and pleated jeans. Pooling wide-legged denim trousers were seen on the runway, but that may not be as easy a transition to accessibility in stores. I’m almost afraid to say that this style lacks the practicality needed to make it to your local mall and favorite retailer. Low rise is still hanging around, but won’t be found in my closet.
Summer 2023 Fashion Trend 3: Forever Plaid
Thank goodness this pattern never goes out of style. Who doesn’t love a cozy flannel plaid shirt in the fall or winter and the colors of the various plaids can say so much about your mood that day. However, the designers at Paris presented plaid looks for summer. A reserved deep red and black plaid for the evening or bright pink and green plaid for a dress for a summer bbq party. Plaid was seen in on the runway as fitted dresses to flouncy asymetrical skirts made from a lightweight fabric.
Summer 2023 Fashion Trend 4: Florals Please
Who doesn’t love a pretty floral pattern on a dress or shirt? On the runway for Summer 2023, designers took florals to the next level with a lot of 3D designs. Raised thick outlines and appliques of flowers and stems on a gown or even petals or leaf shaped fabric blooming from the garment. I chose some looks that would appeal to myself and many of my friends. These are understated compared to many designer looks that walked the runway. Also, I think these are more the accessible looks that we will be able to buy at our local or online fashion outlets.
Summer 2023 Fashion Trend 4: Don’t Fear the Sheer
The sheer look is so hot right now! While traveling in Costa Rica I saw this fashion look everywhere, especially at the beach where a popular trend was a sheer short over a bikini bottom. On the runways the sheer look is definitely not PG rated, but the accessible looks are pretty sweet and very wearable. Designers like Valentino and Givenchy revealed layering of sheer fabric in styles creating a sultry feminine look. Sheer overlays on top of tanks or bralettes are stunning and cool for the summer. Don’t miss out on this hot summer fashion trend. Sheer fabric design materials extended to traditional lace and to crochet looks.
The new fashion looks for Summer 2023 are vast and beautiful and I’m excited to see the accessible looks created from the incredible talented designers whose work we saw on the runways last fall and winter.
